Mireille Guiliano, author of French Women Don’t Get Fat advises women to walk for exercise in addition to favor quality over quantity in the foods they choose. The benefits of walking are undeniable. Walking will help reduce the overall amount of body fat you are carrying around and improve your health. French women, especially Parisians, manage to stay slim thanks to their lifestyle. Paris is a city of walkers. Paris is a compact and small city. You can walk from one end to the other in less than two hours. When you add to the equation the fact that driving, never mind parking, isn’t exactly the most easiest activity, you’ll see why people walk a lot. Most of them do it every morning to go to work, to drop off their kids at school, to go grocery shopping, to run other errands. During a hectic day, they are walking at a fast pace through the city. Great way to burn a lot of calories. Taking the metro is also challenging, no different than interval training in my mind. A workout in itself!!! It requires you to walk and to go up and down the stairs to reach the metro. Going to work in the morning by metro means you’ve already done a little morning workout. In addition, Paris requires effort. You have to wait in line, carry grocery bags to your apartment, etc, etc, etc. If you’re interested in boosting your health and trimming your waistline, incorporate this Parisian lifestyle into your routine. No need for gym membership, there are simpler ways to incorporate activity into your day. To burn calories, all you have to do is walk faster, take the stairs when possible, and do more work around the house. I do follow those guidelines. Every morning, I spend at least an hour around the house, vacuuming, cleaning, doing the laundry…a few lunges..and then back again to house chores like ironing, organizing, etc. I get accomplished so much in that one hour every morning and the bonus is having a clean house.
